In 1947, the series Re 4/4 ushered in a new era and this new generation of locomotives appeared on the Swiss railways. With the commissioning of the Re 4/4 Series, the Swiss Federal Railways changed their entire concept of rail transport. This locomotive that operated on bogies and without driveshafts and had a top speed of 125 km/h, allowed far shorter travel times. Until today they represent a milestone in the history of Swiss locomotive construction. The fast machine, which was remarkably light with only a service mass of 57 t, overcame its deployment time extremely well. With the transition from heavy, slow express train traffic to fast city connections with short stop times, she ushered in a new era in SBB rail traffic. These powerful and versatile engines - 1855kw (2520 horsepower) were used in commuter, as well as multiple roles where their traction power was well suited to the new traction requirements. Their great acceleration capabilities as well as the electrical resistance braking systems were well suited for use with the SBB-Leichstahl carriages. These then represented for some considerable time the passenger rail services of Swiss local rail travel.
