‘Paul Belloni du Chaillu (31 July 1831 (disputed) - 29 April 1903) was a French-American traveller and anthropologist. He became famous in the 1860s for confirming the existence of gorillas while travelling in West Africa. Accounts of his expeditions were published, in 1861 and 1867. Explorations and Adventures in Equatorial Africa, with Accounts of the Manners and Customs of the People, and of the Chace of the Gorilla, Crocodile, and other Animals. In 1865, he was elected king of the Apingi tribe. He deleivered many public lectures in New York, London and Paris (...).’
