Letitia Tyler was married to John Tyler (10th president of the United States).
She had a room on the second floor of the White House, but was unable to fulfill her duties as First Lady in her later years. Because her oldest daughters were already married and had their own homes, and the other children were still too young, her daughter-in-law Priscilla Tyler took on the duties of First Lady when she was 24 years old.
Letitia was loved and admired by her large family. Priscilla said she was the most selfless woman she knew. She died peacefully in 1842 surrounded by her family and was buried on the plantation where she was born.
