The six collotypes are all monogrammed and wrapped in tracing paper. The cover of the extra binding has a custom-made pouch for the collotypes. This copy is as good as new, even after almost 40 years. The edition consists of 100 numbered and signed copies and 10 lettered copies intended for contributors. Rarely offered, certainly in this condition!
This copy also has a dedication by Hugo Claus to René De Ruyter, “voor René De Ruyter”. At the time (1977-1998), De Ruyter ran a well-known antiquarian bookshop on the Hoogstraat.
“Het graf is van Pernath” is an (impressive) tribute to his fellow poet, his friend, and above all, the tippler and partner in crime. It is remarkable how modestly Claus expresses his grief here, how he restrains his own licentiousness: his spirit broken by death, by the admonition: hodie mihi, cras tibi. Death, however, is not the beginning of a new, introverted life, but a spur to find more life, more enjoyment and search for happiness...
