Antique Russian icon “St. George the dragon slayer”, martyr Hand-painted with egg tempera colours on a wooden panel with chalk background. Typical method of icon production in 18th and 19th century in the Tsarist period of Russia. Relatively detailed painting. Perfectly matched colour contrasts and accomplished shading. The painting has craquelure. Partial restorations are present. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of use in the form of scratches, paint flaking and bumps. Punctuated dents in the lower part of the dragon (see photos). The icon contains Levkas (deepening in wood) and is believed to have been made in central Russia around 1850. All saints have name inscriptions. The inscriptions are clearly legible. Both transverse wooden laths are missing on the back.
Relatively widespread motif. The overall impression of the icon is very authentic. A piece of history of the bygone era. A beautiful item for connoisseurs and collectors as well as enthusiasts of Russian icon painting.
All details are clearly visible in the photos. The photos are an integral part of the description.
