A beautiful and very rare antique sculptural "Vieux Bruxelles" porcelain inkwell depicting an "artistic nobleman" writing a poem while taking a rest from painting. It stands out amongst other porcelain inkwells with the rare and charming subject, depicted with exceptionally fine hand-painted details. It has both a feather pen holder and an inkwell. Marked with an underglaze cobalt blue mark.
Provenance: Belgian private collection of 19th-century porcelain inkwells. This piece was undoubtedly one of the finest in the collection.

Overall fairly good condition with some wear to the polychromy and small loss on the bottom back and possibly from the top of the quill. The feather pen is only for display. An exceptionally fine and charming antique collector's piece or table ornament with a beautiful presence.
