bossage de toit ou de plafond - Gothique - Chêne - Fin du XVe siècle

Description
bossage de toit ou de plafond - Gothique - Chêne - Fin du XVe siècle
Flandre

A fine oak roof or ceiling boss in the shape of a quatrefoil - an architectural decoration placed where cross-members of a roof or ceiling intersect - with a representation of Christ as Salvator Mundi. Christ is depicted in a frontal pose with a split beard, his hair is draped evenly over his shoulders. He is clad in a tunic with three large vertical folds, part of his neck and shoulders are unveiled.

The roof boss has various nail holes and wooden plugs, which confirm its use in an architectural setting. On the back there are two incised lines visible which were used to position the piece more easily in the roof structure.

Flanders (Brugge ?). Gothic era. Circa 1470-1500.

Dimensions: H 22.5cm x W 21.8cm x D 3.2cm
