The Memorial Edition - Complete in two volumes with coloured and tinted lithographic plates, folding plans and folding map.

Burton’s celebrated account of his journey, disguised as a Muslim pilgrim, to the holy cities of Mecca and Medina, where entry by non-Muslims was strictly forbidden. This “exploit of linguistic and cultural virtuosity” made Burton famous, and the account has become a classic of travel literature.

Burton's trek to Mecca was dangerous, and his caravan was attacked by bandits (a common experience at the time). As he put it, though "... neither Koran nor Sultan enjoin the death of Jew or Christian intruding within the columns that note the sanctuary limits, nothing could save a European detected by the populace, or one who after pilgrimage declared himself an unbeliever". The pilgrimage entitled him to the title of Hajji and to wear the green head wrap.
