Josep Baqués was born in the Catalan town of Montmeló on June 8th, 1931.

A graphic designer, painter and draughtsman, he has also worked in the sculpture, lithography and photography fields.

Around 1956 he became a professional in the graphic design field, assuming the artistic direction of the agencies Crisol and Danis and finally settling his own studio, working preferably in the branches of company image, brand an product, among which we can name Floid, Cepsa, Cros, Merk, Hoechst, among many others.

He was one of the founders of the “Grafistes Agrupació FAD", considered as the first association of graphic design professionals in Spain and whose founding purpose was the constant progress of the plastic arts applied to the advertising technique. Basqués participated in numerous activities that the aforementioned association organised. On the other hand, and in connection with this aspect, he also worked as a teacher between 1965 and 1970, as teacher of graphic synthesis at the “Escola Massana” and during the academic year 1970-1971 at the “Escola Oficial de Publicitat”, where he was appointed professor in graphism.

As far as his activity as teacher is concerned, we can establish two different periods: The first one during the 1960s, a whole process of investigation and refinement marked by works of rigorous technique, compositional preciousness and chromatic density, which thematically can be framed in a world with a surrealistic background, or fables that seem to emerge from a dream. In his second period, his work was liberated from technical requirements, his experimental zeal directed his septs towards other procedures: sculpture, lithograph...he abandoned the surrealistic appearance in order to opt for a very personal figuration where the shapes were increasingly vigorous and penetrating.

Today, he fully dedicates himself to his creative work in the field of painting, a tireless worker who exhibits in numerous galleries and events around the world.
