An impressive, antique thick cotton bedspread, late 1800s/early 1900s, from Salento region (Italy). The bedspread is entirely frame-embroidered as it was done in the past and has a large embroidered flower in the central part.
The bedspread was made with ancient weaving methods. The light beige background features a pattern of ecru hieroglyphs and flowers alternating with diamond shapes. Its neutral colours match any type of furniture. Each corner is richly decorated and embroidered. A large 60 cm by 50 bouquet in green, orange and yellow has been embroidered in the centre to further beautify this piece, while the remaining surface is covered with small embroidered flowers. It has always been used with the utmost care as a bedspread or as a large tablecloth.
The bedspread measures 253 x 229 cm. A 4 cm high two-tone, beige and ecru, lace fringe that matches the bedspread colours, has been added to the borders taking the overall size to 257x233 cm. It looks very good. It is possible to find embroidered cotton piquet bedspreads on the market, but those embroidered on a loom are a rarity. Its weight and grammage are a proof of its value.
