True first edition of Verne's classic Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. This first edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea is the first known edition in book form and precedes the French, English and American editions by four years. Two volumes in one + 2 page index. All 111 illustrations by Riou and Hildebrand are present and in very nice condition. Half leather spine with boards showing some wear and scuffing primarily at the edges. Gold titles and decoration marble endpapers. Hinges renewed, light foxing on page edges, two pages with larger stains. The book and pages are sturdy and stable. It feels beautiful in the hand and presents beautifully on the shelf. The book was originally purchased from Rose's Books in Harwich Port, Massachusetts, USA who are members of the IOBA (Independent Online Booksellers Association). The store specializes in 19th century rare books.

Now well protected in a custom designed clamshell box with gold lettering of the title, author and year of publication (1869). Overall a very, very nice copy of an exceptionally rare book, a copy of which is in the Spanish National Library.
