Willem Jilts Pol (Leek, 26th March 1905 - Ramatuelle, 15th August 1988)
was a Dutch graphic artist and art critic. His work includes woodcuts, paintings and drawings.
In the late 1930s, he moved with his first wife to the Dutch East Indies, where his daughter Talitha was born in Java in 1940. In the World War II, Pol was interned in a Japanese POW camp while his wife and daughter were held in a different camp. After the war, the family returned back to the Netherlands where his wife died in 1948, as a result of the hardship suffered in the Japanese POW camps.
After her death, Pol lived in England from 1948 until the 1950s. There he married Poppet John in 1952, daughter of the painter August John. The last decades of his life he lived in the South of France where he died in 1988. He left a large body of work behind.
The work of Willem Jilts Pol has remained quite recognisable due to the use of pastel colours and a quick, but stylish, use of lines. Due to the typical "fifties" design, his work was appreciated by many art connoisseurs.
