Vicent Ferrer Guasch (1917-2008) - Casas blancas Ibiza

Dimensions of the oil painting: 55 x 33 Dimensions of the frame: 57 x 35 There are areas with craquelure Vicent Ferrer Guasch (San Antonio Abad, Ibiza, 1917- Ibiza, November 2008) He was a Spanish painter who studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes Sant Jordi, although already from a very young age he received painting lessons from the renowned Ibizan painter Narcís Puget. The main motif of his work is traditional Ibizan architecture, characterized by the whiteness of its walls, its volumetric simplicity and beauty. Vicent Ferrer Guasch was born in Sant Antoni de Pormany, Ibiza, which was at the time an unknown and forgotten small island dedicated to agriculture and artisanal fishing. He followed his primary studies at teacher Albert’s school, in Ibiza. Already in those days he showed a great talent for drawing, and encouraged by his father he painted his first canvas at the age of 9. Later, during his secondary studies, he attended the painting classes of the renowned Ibizan artist Narcís Puget, who introduced him to this subject and provided him with the foundations for his subsequent development as an artist. In 1932 he participated for the first time in a collective exhibition at the Sociedad Cultural Ebusus Cultural, in Ibiza. In 1934 he moved to Barcelona and began his studies in Primary Teaching according to the new Professional Plan, but he returned to his island in 1935 because he was suffering a typhus. In 1936 he returned to Barcelona to continue his studies but then the Civil War broke out. His experiences of the war are collected in an intimate diary, which he began in October 1936 and ended in April 1939 when he moved to Menorca, where his father had died. At the end of the war he returned to Barcelona, and he obtained his degree in Primary Teaching. Then, he began teaching but also continued to paint. Later he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes Sant Jordi of Barcelona and he exhibited regularly in Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza. In 1946 he finished his studies in Fine Arts. In 1962 he moved to Ibiza to take possession of a position as teacher of drawing, at the Instituto de Santa Maria de Ibiza, which he held until his retirement, in 1982. Throughout his life he always combined teaching with his dedication to painting. He left us in November 2008. The paintings of his first period are close to post-Impressionism and show rural landscapes, boats in the port of Barcelona and in his homeland, Ibiza; the market of the town of Ibiza, etc. From the moment when this artist settled permanently on the island of Ibiza his painting became filled with the whites of the alleys of Dalt Vila, the neighbourhood of Sa Penya, and the rural houses and churches. This artist sought simplicity, fleeing picturesqueness and eliminating everything superfluous. Ferrer Guasch played with volumes, light, shadows, and transparencies, thus achieving a very personal style. That is why he is also known as the painter of the whites of Ibiza.
