Condition Union Case: The case shows ageing and handling, cracked and glued at the lock, a diagonal crack and restauration can be found on the front of the case. Small crack at the lower corner.
Condition Daguerreotypes: In good condition, oxidised on the edges. And three oxidation lines can be found crossing the image.

A 'Union case” or “Thermoplastic” were made from a mixture of wood sawdust and shellac that was pressed into a mold. The result was a plastic-like product that still looks good after a ca. one hundred and fifty years later!
The cases can always be dated after 1856.
