Prints Characters: Sawamura Tossho II 2代目沢村訥升 playing the role of Sakingo Yorikane 左金吾頼兼 (left), Sawamura Tanosuke III 3代目沢村田之助 playing the role of the Courtesan Keisei Takao けいせゐ高尾 (center), Nakamura Shikan IV 4代目中村芝翫 playing the role of the sumo wrestler Kinukawa Tanizo きぬ川谷蔵 (right) in the kabuki play "Sakigakete Iwao no Date Zome" 魁花岩尾伊達染 performed at the Nakamura-za 中村座 theater in Edo 江戸.

The daimyo Ashikaga Sakingo Yorikane, had in his service a retainer, Kinugawa Tanizo. Yorikane was surrounded by many dangers. Tanizo implored him to take refuge in a place of safety. Yorikane refused, not wishing to desert his mistress, the courtesan Takao. Tanizo therefore killed Takao to set Yorikane free and compel him to seek safety (in the triptych a representation of the three characters in the boat where the courtesan will find her death).
