Large folio
Binding in a parchment sheet with a Medieval manuscript, with some drop caps illuminated in colour.
Aldina, printed by Bonelli: "Impressa sunt ad exemplum postremae editionis Aldinae, ex ultima PAULI MANUTII Correctione".

The oldest surviving book of Latin rhetoric, dating back to the late 80s BC, still used today as a textbook on the structure and ways of learning rhetoric.

As can be seen from the photos, the plates are entirely handwritten with signs of woodworm and wear at the corners. The spine has been restored with antique cardboard. Sheets: [6] 137 [1]. A small owner’s stamp on the first blank page, stains but clear interior on thick paper, bright ink.

Double woodcut typographic brand on the title page and on the last page. Minerva with helmet, spear and shield rides a lion. Initials: ZMBV. Within illustrated frame. Motto: "Virtuti omnia parent. nel frontespizio".
Spider in the centre of a web on the colophon. Initials Z.M.B.V. at the bottom. Motto: "Cum Minerva manum quoque move".
Text in double columns, numerous beautiful woodcut initials.

Although "Rhetorica ad Herennium" has been attributed to Cicero, it is said to be of unknown authorship. [It] ... ".. it is the oldest surviving book of Latin rhetoric, dating back to the late 1980s BC, and is still used today as a textbook on the structure and uses of rhetoric and persuasion”.

Rare Edition, edited by Paolo Manuzio, Josse Badius Ascensius (and others). Printed in Venice by Giovanni Maria I Bonelli, and bound in medieval handwritten parchment.
