Alfred Verwee (1838-1895) Attributed to - Old Village Knokke
Alfred Jacques Verwee (23 April 1838, Sint-Joost-ten-Node - 15 September 1895, Schaerbeek) was a Belgian painter known for his depictions of animals, landscapes and seascapes.
Around 1880, he became fascinated with the area surrounding Knokke, and an informal artists' colony slowly took root here. He began alternating between landscape and animal painting. He is generally considered to be Belgium's first great animal painter.
He is well known for his very large paintings of animals, especially bulls and cows but also smaller paintings of landscapes around Knokke.
A lot of his small works found in his atelier was not signed but certified to be his by his daughter Emma Verwee. This is the case here or like the example shown of a painting at the Sincfala Museum Knokke.
Works in Museums in Brussels, Gent, Knokke, Ostend, etc.
