Bùi Xuân Phái was a Vietnamese painter. He is famous for the paintings of Hanoi's old district. Bui Xuan Phai, the best known of all Vietnamese modern painters, is respected and admired for both his art as well as his moral character. He embodies for the Vietnamese the only artist who suffers from his art: he lost his teaching position at the Hanoi College of Fine Arts in 1957 for supporting Nhân Văn affair a movement for the political and cultural freedom and if are work in public does not show it to a solo exhibition in 1984.

However, he received the Ho Chi Minh Prize posthumously in 1996, the highest national prize in Vietnam. He is exhibited by art gallery owner Huynh Thong Nhat from Hanoi.
