Bonaventura Peeters was an Antwerp seascape painter who was active in the Antwerp St.Lucas Guild between 1634 and 1652. Many of Peeters' paintings show real locations and he probably travelled the coasts of Scandinavia for a while; his canvases of ports of the Mediterranean / Middle East are probably inspired by fantasy and old images.
A beautiful painting with vivid colours by Bonaventura Peeters of fishermen during stormy weather, near a signal post with the contours of the city of Dordrecht (Holland) in the background.
The painting has been parqueted due to a fracture and was recently cleaned by a professional restorer. The layer of varnish is very dirty (see the photo).
The frame is probably 18th century and is very beautiful. Thanks to the many ornaments, the frame matches perfectly with the choppy water.
The total dimensions (with the frame) are 67 x 81 cm.
