Artist: Fukuda Bisen (1875-1963)
Publisher: Kanao Bun'endo (金尾文淵堂)
Date: 1920

2 books of 1st edition.
10 colour woodblock prints spread across 2 pages and numerous photographic plates.

Dimensions of each book: 23 x 31 x 3.5 cm
All 3 edges of each book gold gilt.

A few years after Bun'endô had published the justly famous "Shina taikan" by the same artist, the publisher, Kanao Takejiro, assembled the same group of artisans (incuding the master printer, Nishimura Kumakichi) to craft another "take" on the scenery of China - a series of 30 "scrolls" in color woodcut embedded in a narrative shot through with a multitude of illustrations in other media. Scott Johnson in his seminal article on the sketchtour genre in Andon 37, has called "Shina taikan" "the most ambitious of all the sketch-tour books." The "Shina sanjū gakan" is certainly no less of an impressive achievement (and a much scarcer book).

The present two volumes reproduce 30 painted scrolls of China in their entirety.
It took the artist two years to paint them and their total combined length was over 200 meters. All of the photographic plates are reproduced in black and white, but 10 sections of the scrolls were reproduced in colour woodblock prints to give a better impression of their vitality.

Includes original wraparound chitsu. The chitsu itself is a work of art, depicting junks on a river. The hinges of the chitsu have been taped.
Light foxing on some pages.
The spines / hinges of the books have been taped and there are 2 cuts on the spine of 1 volume as shown.
