Johannes Marie Christiaan ('Jan') Asselbergs was born in the Dutch East Indies in 1937. He lived through the war of independence and when he was twelve years old, he went back to the Netherlands with his father.
The human figure is the central theme of Asselbergs' oeuvre. He made watercolours, drawings, paintings and sculptures in various styles. From 1980 onwards, he focused mainly on the making of portraits. In addition to portraying 'unknown' people, he also portrayed many well-known Dutch people, such as King Willem-Alexander, Bishop Hurkmans, Marco Borsato, Monique van de Ven and Ruud Lubbers.
The offered work is signed on the bottom right. The painting was found authentic by the artist's widow.
This painting shows a landscape with a mill along the waterside. The docked boat is very beautifully painted as well as the reflections in the water.
