Jan H.B. Koekkoek was the third son of marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek (1815-1882) and was trained, like his brothers, by his father. His father's influence is evident in the detailed, romantic painting style and the fine detailing of his early sea and river views. Later in 1864, after his move to Hilversum, in Het Gooi, the birthplace of the Laren School, he switched to a looser style. From that time on, he mainly painted beach and seascapes and scenes from fishing life in a style influenced by the Hague School.
Jan H.B. Koekkoek was in turn a teacher to his son Gerardus Johannes Koekkoek (1871-1956). He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. His work can be found in several museums, including the Museum Jan Cun.
