Freek Engel (1872-1958).
The Koog aan de Zaan painter Freek Engel was educated at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid in Amsterdam. For a number of years he worked as a photographer in Zaandam, but then focused entirely on artistry. Engel developed into a renowned cattle painter, like cows in the Dutch polder landscape in, for example, the Westzijderveld. He also painted stable interiors.
In his art, Engel has never been influenced by new art movements, and he has continued to work in a style of Dutch impressionism.
In 2010, his biography 'Een wereld van weiden en water’' was published.
