Properties of cotton fabrics

COTTON - A textile fibre obtained from the hair that cover the seeds of
the plant of the same name. There are kinds of cotton with different qualities depending
on their origin. The most valuable is the Sea Island, with long silky fibres, which
is used for the most refined works. Cottons are ranked according to
their title, while the fibre’s length determines its
quality: the longer it is, the brighter, more durable and valuable the cotton. The
fibre length, i.e. the cut, can measure from less than 20 to more than 40 mm. The variety
called Superfine St. Vincent reaches 50 and 60 mm. Egyptian cotton is also called
Jumel or Moho, it’s characterized by shades of colour ranging from yellow to brown. Peruvian
(Pima) cottons, as precious as the Egyptian, look like wool so they are often used
blended with this fibre. American cotton, called Upland, has short fibres and takes its name
from its lands of origin: Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Orlèans. Indian cottons have even shorter fibres than the
American one and are of poorer quality.
Cotton is a light and sturdy fibre at the same time, it does not protect against the cold, like wool, but
it protects against the heat, especially if you wear white cotton clothes.
Its name derives from the Arabic ‘Katun’ (part of the conquered lands). After linen and wool, cotton is the
oldest textile fibre. Cotton is the most widespread fabric in the world, inexpensive, very versatile,
it absorbs perfectly all types of colouring.
Cotton maintenance requires no special attention: it can be washed at high temperatures
(we do not recommend temperatures above 60 degrees to safeguard the longevity of the colours and of the fabric);
It can be ironed at the highest temperatures.
