The Orval brewery, established within the abbey, was founded in 1931 to finance the works for the reconstruction of Orval. From the outset the brewery recruited laymen as working forces, among whom first master-brewer Pappenheimer, to which the unique recipe is attributed.
The commercial policy of the brewery is adapted to the values used by the monastery community. The brand's income is spent on social assistance and to the maintenance of the buildings.
