Beautiful copy of the Ortelius map of Italy in Roman Times, published in Ortelius' Parergon, an atlas depicting the ancient world. This was published as an appendix to Ortelius’ Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, which is considered the first modern atlas.
The map is based upon Gastaldi's map of Italy, supplemented with classical sources.
The map was first published in 1584. Beginning in 1601, a second state of the map was issued, with a revised cartouche (2 medallions) and a different scale of miles (lacking the date). This one is most likely published around 1609.
