View in bird's-eye view of the city of Heidelberg on the Neckar, by Wenceslaus Hollar. Title in a cartouche on the top right, a cartouche with coat of arms on the left.
In the foreground is the north bank of the Neckar, in the middle is a flat stone with a compass. The other bank shows the city. On the left is Heidelberg castle on the Königstuhl hill.
Signed in the plate at the bottom: 'WHollar'.
Probably from a series of German cityscapes by Hollar published by Johannes Janssonius, Amsterdam 1657 (Pennington 1982, 853).
A later version with another foreground and added fortifications was issued about 1680 by M. Merian in 'Topographia Germaniae' as: 'Wahre contrafactur der Shurfursclichen Residens Statt Heidelberg'.
In excellent condition, page 35 x 50.5 cm, with sufficient margins, on laid paper, folds which were flattened upon issue, not coloured, verso blank.
