The Dutch painter and sculptor Constant was born in Amsterdam in 1920 as Constant Anton Nieuwenhuijs. However, he wrote his name as Nieuwenhuys and mainly used his first name. Constant studied from 1939 to 1942 at the Kunstnijverheidsschool and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam.
In 1948 Constant was a co-founder of the Dutch Experimental group and Cobra.
He settled in Paris in 1950. During this period the war paintings arose, in which he showed a destroyed world.
