After his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ixelles, he worked in the decoration workshop of the painter Paul Hermanus. A member of the Cercle Artistique de Bruxelles, he obtained a grant from the Belgian government in 1907 and took part in Belgian and foreign fairs in Brussels, Antwerp, Liège, Charleroi, Mons, Barcelona and Nice, among others. He also collaborates with the ‘Revue de l'art belge’, ‘Savoir et beauté’ and ‘Le Home1’.
Clesse paints landscapes, still lifes and harbour views. The forests around Brussels (he frequented the Rouge-Cloître), but also the Belgian coast, the north of France and the polders are his favourite subjects. You can find his house in Oudenburg.
He’s close to Impressionism and can be compared to Isidore Verheyden or Franz Courtens.
In 1939, the municipality of Auderghem dedicated an avenue to him when he was still alive (1942).
His works are kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp and at the Japanese Embassy in Brussels.
