Gender dimorphism is strongly pronounced during the reproductive period. The body top of the males is shiny black, the body underside is white. The legs of the male are grey-black, the beak is pink to bright red. Most striking are the extended middle four rectrices, which run out pointedly. The female and the male in the eclipse plumage, on the other hand, are coloured similarly to a sparrow. The male also has a pink or bright red beak outside of the reproductive period. In the females, the upper beak is blackish during the reproductive period, but red-brown outside of the reproductive period. [3] Young birds resemble the female, but their plumage is greyer and not as clearly maroon and isabell-coloured as with the female or the male ones in the eclipse plumage.
