Very beautiful and atmospheric work by A. P Schotel, Dordrecht 1890-1958 Laren.
Crowds on the Oude Maas during the raids of the evening.
Oil on canvas - signed - 1919
Was professionally cleaned and has a new varnish layer.
View from Dordrecht over the Oude Maas of Zwijndrecht.
In the centre of the work is the mill called ‘Welgelegen’. Until its demolition in 1965, this mill stood at the Balkengat in Zwijndrecht on the river junction Oude Maas, Noord and Beneden Merwede.
Anthonie Pieter Schotel (1890-1958), a Dordrecht painter, was limited to pretty much one subject: the water. From his successive residences (Dordrecht, Volendam, Vlissingen, Rotterdam and Laren) he studied the water and the ships. He was hooked on the tough fishing boats on the Zuiderzee that he saw entering and leaving the Volendam harbour under an ever-changing sky.
Schotel couldn’t complain about his success during his life. Critics praise-fully called him 'the Mesdag of the Zuiderzee ' and 'Aquarius' of the Gooise painters. The Zuiderzee museum in Enkhuizen has a fine collection of his work. This collection of Schotels is now a historical document of the Zuiderzee.
