The bird was professionally and very elaborately restored and is in excellent condition
The short-eared owl (Asio flammeus) is a species of bird from the Asio genus within the family of Strigidae. Their short feather tufts are usually flattened and therefore not visible. The English name short-eared owl emphasises this feature, while the German one emphasises the habitat preferences of the species for wetlands and marshes.
The crow-sized bird, which is about 40 centimetres long in size, is located in at least seven subspecies almost worldwide and is therefore one of the owl species with the largest distribution area. Short-eared owls are one of the few species of the Strigidae that have also been able to colonise islands far from the coast. It is the only owl species in Hawaii.
