D. Thomae Aquinatis Doctoris Angelici Complectens Primam Secundae & Secundam Secundae Summae Theologiae cum Commentariis Thomae de Vio Caietani...
Romae 1570 (1569 on the colophon)
Apud Iulium Accoltum
Large folio - 37 x 26 cm.
(16), 269; (22), 478 f.
Beautiful copies of the Theological Summa in "Primam Secundae & Secundam Secundae" by St. Thomas Aquinas, complete in 2 volumes.
It belongs to the very rare Omnia Opera
(tomus undecimus divided into 2 volumes).
Each tome of opera omnia deals with complete topics in their own right.
On the last photograph there is a summary of the topics, referring to each of the 18 volumes of the work
(taken from the first volume).
Fine and original coeval full leather binding on wooden slats, adorned with refined embossed decorations (animals, armour, drums, bows, quivers, scimitars, etc), all enclosed within elegant geometric frames.
The covers of the copies of this Opera Omnia (here are offered 5 volumes out of 18), while presenting the same figurative elements, were bound each with different geometric designs, keeping the exclusive and precious uniqueness of each copy.
Traces of antique parchment used for the binding on the counter-plates (see photos).
Abrasions and defects to the covers, especially where originally there were likely closing hooks.
The binding still looks firm and solid.
Recurring woodworm holes to the covers, expertly repaired.
Excellent professional restoration to the front hinge of the first volume.
Spine with 5 raised bands, with evocative coeval paper manuscripts (missing a few fragments on the second volume) and old archive placing.
Interior in good condition, with thick sheets and wide margins.
Each volume has its own cover page.
Presence of registrum in both volumes (the first colophon reads 1569 instead of 1570 from cover page).
Beautiful typographic brand at the end of the work
(motto: SIC CREDE).
Browning and recurring punctiform traces of extinct woodworm, present throughout the text.
The text is still perfectly readable (see photos).
Monastic ownership stamps.
Beautiful watermark, with religious symbol, in the centre of numerous white sheets.
Tear on the first blank sheet of the second volume (see last photos) and small tears, without loss of text, to sheets 178 and 185.
Sheet 454 is omitted in the second volume (editorial).
In good overall condition.
