Original cover created by Franquin for "Clarim e Fantásio, o feiticeiro de Vila Nova de Milfungos”, the first Portuguese edition of "Spirou et Fantasio, il y a un sorcier à Champignac" (1967). Drawing in ink on Vangophan (transparent plastic). Franquin is known to have worked with this material for creating covers in the 1960s. Composed of 2 layers, the first with black pen and pencil on Vangophan, the second with the original colouring of the final artwork. Size with frame: 50 x 40 cm. The artwork was expertised on location by Louis Girard, Catawiki expert and member of the Chambre Nationale des Experts Spécialisés en objets d'art et de collection (C.N.E.S.). Franquin made the drawing in pencil on the Vangophan first, then painted the drawing on the Vangophan. There are still traces of pencil on the Vangophan. This spectacular and unique original cover, especially created for the Portuguese edition it is believed to have been drawn by Franquin in 1964/65. The album was published in Portugal in 1967 as "Clarim e Fantásio". The original artwork was missing ever since and there was no trace of it in the archives, confirms Frédéric Jannin, responsible for the Franquin Archives. It turns out that a few years after its creation, Franquin exchanged the original artwork with a Portuguese comic artist who visited Brussels, looking for an opportunity to have his work published in the Tintin weekly. The Franquin artwork was found in the inheritance of the Portuguese artist in Lisbon where it was preserved all these years. The 1960s are generally regarded as Franquin's top graphical period and artwork from that time is very much in demand by investors and collectors. The Portuguese album is not included in this lot, nor are any other publications.
