Heavy electric locomotive Series Ae 8/14 of the Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB).
This monumental powerhouse is a Jubilee Edition in celebration of 150 years of Swiss Railways.
With a service weight of 240 tonnes and eight traction motors, this monumental machine achieved a starting power of no less than 50 tonnes.
The hourly output of 7,500 horsepower was transmitted by the proven Buchli drive system.
This resulted in good running characteristics, even when negotiating small curve radii and turnout combinations.
See extensive photo session of this impressive locomotive.
The presentation rail is not a part of this offer.
Mainline history:
Building series Ae 8/14
The Series Ae 8/14 was commissioned by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and built by the SLM and the BBC. The no. 11851 locomotive was built by the SLM and the MFO. In the late 1920s there was a need for a powerful locomotive to be able to deal with heavy freight traffic on the Gotthardtbahn with its inclines of up to 27 percent. The required hauling power was so enormous that only a double locomotive unit could cope with these requirements. The SBB ordered the construction of a double locomotive that, with 8 axles and a weight of around 250 tons, could handle the freight traffic on the Gotthardt route and could be also used for passenger trains.
A total of 3 different prototypes of the Ae 8/14 series were built. The locomotives 11801 and 11851 were still similar in appearance, while the locomotive with running number 11852 had a very different appearance.
Development and operation:
In February 1929 the locomotive manufacturers were invited to develop and submit designs. Heavy requirements were imposed on the locomotive to be developed which, on a slope of 26‰, had to be able to tow 600 tonnes at a speed of 62 km/h and freight trains of 750 tonnes at a speed of 50 km/h. The maximum speed of the locomotive was set at 100 km/h. Twenty designs were submitted, with the SBB making the choice for a SLM and BBC design which was based on the construction of the Ae 4/7 Construction series to double loc.
11801
The SBB commissioned BBC and SLM Winterthur to build the design based on the Ae 4/7 construction series. The locomotive was delivered in 1931 and deployed. With a service weight of 240 tons and the 8 traction engines, the machine reached a starter force of 50 tons. The hourly output of 7,500 horsepower was transmitted by the proven Buchli drive system. This provided good driving properties also in small curve radii and on branch points. The 11801 remained in the regular service until 1975.
11851
In 1932, the construction of the Ae 8/14 followed with company number 11851, which had many similarities with the 11801. The locomotive was built by BBC and MFO. Both the housing, as well as the mechanical part were built in the same factory and were largely identical to the 11801. The 11851 had smaller drive wheels and dual motors. In 1961, the locomotive was converted and the cabs were equipped with seats for the driver. The train driver's cab was adapted according to the Ae 6/6 series. In 1976, the locomotive was taken out of service and demolished after all the still usable parts had been removed.
