Gijsbertus Jan Sijthoff was born on 6 August 1867 in Delft. Was educated at the academy of fine arts in The Hague. After his studies, he was educated by B.J. Blommers. He made paintings, watercolours, and lithographs of portraits, interiors, exteriors, cityscapes, and landscapes.
Sijthoff was a member of 'St.Lucas' and 'Pulchri', the ‘Nederlandse Kunstkring’ and the ‘Vereniging van Beeldend Kunstenaars Laren-Blaricum'. He taught his wife Johanna Bastiana van Rijswijk, A.F.A.M. Hiel and Maria Ch. J. Sterre de Jong. He passed away in 1949.
There is a small scratch at the top of the artwork (see photos).
The watercolour shown in this description belonged to a private collection of paintings and watercolours by 19th and 20th century painters.
The image of a Japanese woman was painted around 1910.
