On 19 July 1937 the exhibition „Entartete Kunst" (Degenerate art) was opened in the Hofgarten-Arkaden in Munich. On display were 650 artworks that had been confiscated from 32 museums in Germany. The most National Socialists considered art that could not be reconciled with their ideological aesthetics and Nazi propaganda, including Expressionism, Impressionism, Dada, New Objectivity, Surrealism, Cubism and Fauvism, to be "degenerate". Many of the most talented and innovative German artists fell victim to defamation, including George Grosz, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Ernst, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Max Pechstein, Paul Klee and Ernst Barlach. Initiated by Propaganda Minister Goebbels and the President of the Reichskammer der bildenden Künste Adolf Ziegler
