Jac Douven was educated at the Sint Lucas Institute in Sint Jans-Molenbeek (1923-1928). After this technical training, the artist wanted to learn the art of landscape painting. His first teacher was Charles Wellens, who, according to Jac, wanted to impose his own method onto the pupils too much. This was not the case with his next teacher Armand Maclot. It was with him that Jac Douven learned to use and develop his talents. The painter also met another student at Maclot, Willy Minders, who later became a very good friend. During the local painting tours he also met Habex. Jac Douven has also always had a great deal of admiration for brother Max. He found inspiration mainly in the Kempisch landscape such as the heathland, the forests, the fens, etc. and also regularly roamed the Ardennes, southern France, Spain, Italy. His works always exude the peace and a certain atmosphere. Douven also painted still lifes and compositions with figures. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, he made some abstract works. This experimental period did not last long and Douven returned to his impressionist works.
