Augsburg, Alexander Weißenhorn 1538

Moderate black canvas, single-column print, roman pagination. Sheet size 30.0 x 19.0 cm; type area 26.0 x 16.0 cm. 2 numbered sheets, including title and dedication. 11 (erroneous 12 pages) numbered sheets, the sheet with the dedication bound between sheets IIII and V. probably without the last white sheet. Large monogrammed title woodcut by Hans Burgkmair (Hans Brosamer?). Some figurative woodcut initials in the style of the Augsburg "Kinderalphabet" by Hans Weidnitz.

Extremely rare 1st German edition, which face far more than 80 Latin issues in the VD 16. The work was translated by the German writer and humanist Simon Schaidenreisser (1497-1592) (rector of the Latin School in Munich since 1525, author of the first German Odyssey translation, which marked the beginning of the German-language Homer adaptation). It is attributed to the famous field captain and keeper in Tölz Kaspar Winzerer, the author Gevatter. The work presented here is one of the last prints from the "Augsburg Offizin bei Weissenhorn".
Very good condition. Strong and mostly very clean print. Thick paper. Paper just a little bit browned, title at margins somewhat brownish. Partially minimally brown spotted in outer margin. 1 sheet with underlinings and old handwritten marginalia.

In these paradoxes, dedicated to Marcus Brutus, Cicero presents the Stoa in six core sets. - VD 16, C 3509; Graesse II, 180; Hollstein 726.
