Biography of Joaquim Vancells Vieta (Barcelona, 1866-1942)

He moved with his family to Terrassa, he studied drawing and painting (1882 - 83) in the Cercle Artístic Terrasens with the marine art painter Sivilla and the painter Martínez Altés. Still, the strongest influence was Joaquim Vayredae’s landscaping, with his harmony of colours and his lyrism.

He then studied in the Llotja, where he did not get along with Antoni Caba, and he left academic teaching for outdoor painting. He perfected himself alone, painting in the vicinity of Terrassa. In 1891 he presented a landscape of the Vallés in the Sala Parés and he obtained for this painting an honorific mention in the Barcelona Exposición de Bellas Artes. In 1894 he obtained a second medal with Sant Llorenç del Munt, and in 1896 a first medal with Riera de la Barata. His better pictures in grey are from 1890 to 1896. They lead him to a pictorial lyrism that bring him closer to the contemporary idealistic painting and in them he obtains a great poetry thanks to the mysterious veils of fog that surround and nuance the contours of Sant Llorenç mountains. His friendship with Alexandre de Riquer and Modest Urgell surely contributed to give his works this sentimental character, and the influence of the former became noticeable in the field of modernist decoration that he introduced in Terrassa: he finished the decoration of the Institut Industrial - started by Riquer- he decorated the Amat Pagès house, the halls of the Regionalist Group, the Café Comdal, the shop Vídua Carnero, in a modernist style of British roots. He was an entrepreneur and director of the Ars Lucis art shows developed in Terrassa in 1906-07, with the collaboration of Joan Llongueras. Founding member of the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc, he painted the landscapes in two ceilings of Montserrat’s presbytery which figurines are from Baixeras. He was responsible for many of the landscapes in Cusachs’ paintings. While continuing to cultivate a lyrical and cloudy landscaping in an already standardized and commercial way, his original work evolved towards a more vivid painting in colours, with a more vigorous pictorial matter, a more objective, more realistic art, developed in the same natural landscapes of Llavaneres and Terrassa.
