Arnoldus Goudgulden or St. Jan's Gold Guilder, in the name of Arnold van Egmond, Duke of Gelre.
Struck around 1450. Coin weight: approx. 2.9 g
John the Baptist is depicted on the obverse side, with a halo around his head, and with long hair, which can be seen like flames beside his upper body. He is holding a staff in his left hand with a cross at the end, his left hand pointing upward, in a reproachful manner. The legend reads: *S* Iohannes + Babtista, with a small, standing lion, facing left.
The reverse side depicts a large coat of arms at the centre – joint Gelre and Gulik – inside a double lined quatrefoil – around it are four smaller coats of arms, Arnhem, Gelre, Zutphen and an unknown coat of arms.
The circumscription is: +DVX-ARNOLD-GEL. Z-IVL. Z-COMIS-Z as an abbreviation of Dux Arnoldus Gelria et lulicea Comes Zutphania (Translated: Duke Arnold of Gelre and Gulik, Count of Zutphen).
Comes in the Royal Dutch Mint packaging, including a certificate of authenticity.
