Large Roman Military silver alloy crossbow fibula. Incised decorations on the top of the high arched bow, circle-dot decorations and inscription LEG III on the side of the bow. Knob terminals on the head.
Legio tertia Gallica was founded in 49-48 BC by Julius Caesar to help in his war against Peompey and it was still active in the early 4th century. The symbol of the Legio III Gallica was a bull.
Size: 72,3 x 59,4 mm
Good solid condition, complete with pin (rigid) and catchplate. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images for own impression.
