Large bronze sculpture depicting Vercingetorix while holding the palm leaf of victory. Signed Edouard Drouot and with foundry stamp.
The sculpture has great patina and is in superb condition. Please study the photos well, they are part of the description.
A variant of this sculpture is depicted and mentioned in the standard work of Pierre Kjellberg "Bronzes of the 19th century" pages 291-295 (see also the last 2 images). It is complete with palm leaf, which is quite extraordinary. This is often missing as it is a separate piece.
Edouard Drout (1859-1945) was a French artist, renowned for his sculptures of mythological and allegoric scenes. This are characterised by a feeling of motion and expression. Drout studied with the artist Mathurin Moreau at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and exhibited since 1889 in the Paris Salon.
