Very rare figure of a monk with prayer book following the example of Claus Sluter ( 1350 - 1406) who found a lot of resonance with his famous tomb for Philip the Bold in the Chartreuse of Champmol near Dijon in the then Burgundian Netherlands.
The fold of the monk's robe and the facial expression bear witness to a talented sculptor.
The figure was originally painted in white to imitate the marble of the figurines from Champmol. Traces of this can still be found in the cavities (see pictures).
Throughout time, the monk lost his right arm (see pictures).
The pedestal is attached to the sculpture with large wrought iron nails (see photo's bottom).
