Eliz Kauppi (1921-2004) founded in 1945, at the young age of 24, his well-known (even today) jewellery workshop Kupittaan Kulta in Turku. His vision of a new jewellery design inspired generations of designers and goldsmiths and helped Finland enter the international fashion scene. As part of the younger generation, Kauppi and many other goldsmiths changed the design of Scandinavian jewellery forever. Driven by the desire to reinvent jewellery design, he had to deal with two adversities: the adversities of war and his own desire to put aside outdated conventions in jewellery design. He was one of the first to use domestic gemstones, such as granite or spectrolite, which he staged in an unusual way and which gave him a new prestige. The amazing results of his innovative ideas caught international attention. Kauppi soon exhibited internationally and earned high profits.
