It was designed and prototyped by the 50 C/s Group (a European consortium to promote the use of 25 kV AC / 50 Hz on railways in the early 1960s). The consortium consisted of experts in the field of rail electrification Siemens, Alsthom, AEG, MFOerlikon , Brown-Boveri and seven smaller companies) commissioned by the Hungarian government.
