The National Society of Local Railways (Nationale Maatschappij Van Buurtspoorwegen / NMVB), or in French "Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Vicinaux" (abbreviation SNCV), was the national regional transport company in Belgium.
The NMVB was founded by the State on 29 May 1884 and had the task of establishing tramways in the areas that would not be unlocked by train. Under the management of the NMVB a large tramway network was built. This tramway network was later cut down and except for a few lines replaced by bus lines. In 1991, the NMVB was split into a Flemish society and a Walloon society. In the past, the local trams of the NMVB were also sometimes called the farmer's tram because it transported the farmers from the countryside to the city.
