Alfons Blomme (Roeselare 1889-1979) studied at the Academies of Roeselare and Brussels. At the outbreak of WWI he fled to the Netherlands, where he found shelter in Nuenen. From there he visited Zeeland, which made a deep impression on him and since then he has returned every year to paint on Schouwen and Walcheren.
Blomme belongs to the Flemish expressionists. In his early years he made symbolic works, later mainly landscapes, cityscapes (Bruges, Veere, Zierikzee) and portraits. His use of colour is light and bright as with Ensor, the paint is thin and raised in small arcs. In Roeselare is a museum specially dedicated to his work.
