Biography:
Jan Wiegers (Kommerzijl, 31 July 1893 – Amsterdam 30 November 1959) was a Dutch expressionist painter. He was the pioneer of De Ploeg in Groningen. Wiegers studied at the Academie Minerva in Groningen, but he also visited the Academy of Rotterdam and The Hague. During a stay in the Swiss city of Davos in 1920, he became friends with the German expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner who became a strong influence on him. Back then, in 1917, he had already established the art movement De Ploeg in Groningen. Unlike the expressionists from the Bergen School, Wiegers and the 'Ploegers' used a striking and eventful colour palette, inspired by the German expressionists. Other members of De Ploeg were Johan Dijkstra, Jan van der Zee, Hendrik Werkman, George Martens, Jacob Gerard Hansen, Jan Altink, J.G. Jordens, Marinus Heijnes, Ekke Abel Kleima and Jannes de Vries. In 1934, he left Groningen and moved to Amsterdam. In 1953 he became a professor at the Royal Academy.
