Ancient Roman Military Enamelled Piriform Seal Box imitating an Eye.
Circular Enamel decoration above and the letter V ( probably from VICTORIA - Victory) bellow.
The seal boxes were used to secure wooden writing tablets.
The holes in the base of the seal box fastened it to the tablet, wax was poured inside and a seal impression made from a ring. If the string was cut or the seal damaged, the receiver knew the document had been tampered with.
A rare and interesting example.
Unsignificantly slightly broken on the edge and three holes on the back, otherwise in good condition.
